Week 37 of 2026: China’s tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) raw material market posted divergent regional performance. Prices of raw fish delivered to processing plants rose in Guangdong and Guangxi due to tight supply, while the Hainan market remained stable. Meanwhile, US wholesale prices stabilized after a modest increase. Nevertheless, China’s tilapia export volume to the US was notably lower than the same period last year, and the export structure is shifting rapidly toward emerging markets in Africa and elsewhere.

Tight regional supply lifts raw tilapia prices in Guangdong and Guangxi

In Week 37 of 2026, raw tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) prices varied across major producing regions. For 500–800g tilapia supplied to processing plants, the price climbed by RMB 0.20 per kilogram in Guangdong, and saw a sharper rise of RMB 0.40 per kilogram in Guangxi, whereas prices in Hainan stayed unchanged. Market sources reported that processors in Guangdong and Guangxi are grappling with falling harvest volumes and low inventories, which has driven them to raise prices proactively to secure raw supplies.

Hainan market remains steady with relatively weak buying interest from processors

Unlike the price uptrend in Guangdong and Guangxi, raw tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) prices in Hainan held steady in Week 37. Although harvest volumes in Hainan also declined, local processors were far less eager to purchase raw materials compared with their counterparts in Guangdong and Guangxi, leaving little upward pressure on prices. This regional gap reflects different thinking among processors regarding raw material procurement strategies.

US wholesale prices flat; China’s tilapia export landscape undergoes rapid transformation

Wholesale prices of frozen tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fillets in the US went up by around USD 0.05 per pound in Week 36 and remained stable in Week 37. Existing stock levels and tepid demand capped further price gains. Statistics show that between January and June 2026, US imports of frozen Chinese tilapia fillets totalled 78.57 million pounds, a 16% drop year-on-year from 2025. At the same time, China’s tilapia export destinations are changing: Mexico has surpassed the US as an export market, while African markets including Côte d’Ivoire are expanding rapidly, bringing new growth opportunities for Chinese exporters.
