Tilapia Prices Stabilize, Farmers Turn More Optimistic

In Week 23 of 2026, raw tilapia prices remained steady across South China. From June 1 to 7, the procurement prices for 500–800 gram tilapia delivered to processing plants in Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan stayed unchanged week-on-week, while farmers grew more optimistic about the market outlook.

Prices neither rose further nor dipped. Mainstream sizes purchased by processors in South China held steady at the previous week’s levels. Market focus has shifted to export policies and demand trends in the second half of the year. Following recent China-US trade talks, farmers have growing expectations that the US may cut tariffs on certain Chinese seafood products. The two sides previously reached an agreement to reduce tariffs on goods worth 30 billion US dollars, covering a range of seafood items, which has lifted sentiment across the entire tilapia industrial chain.

Domestic industry media Fish First forecasts that China’s tilapia prices may recover in the second half of 2026. The forecast is based on reduced fry stocking in the first half of the year, which is set to ease supply pressure going forward. For processing plants, stable raw material prices facilitate order acquisition and quotation management. Nevertheless, export enterprises remain prudent in balancing order profits and inventory turnover, as tilapia prices in the US market have slid recently.

Chinese tilapia exporters are diversifying sales channels to cut reliance on the US market. Two major seafood exhibitions were held in Asia in late May: Thaifex in Bangkok, Thailand, and Seafood Expo Asia-Pacific in Dalian, China. Some Chinese tilapia suppliers attended the Thailand show to explore clients across Southeast Asia, while others focused on expanding domestic sales at the Dalian event.

A manager from a tilapia enterprise in Guangxi stated that companies participated in Thaifex to develop more Southeast Asian buyers, while others aimed to promote products in the domestic market. Hit by US tariffs last year, many exporters have become wary of over-reliance on a single market. Exploring new clients in Thailand has become a key part of their sales restructuring.

Vietnam is also expanding its tilapia industry, though its total output is still much lower than China’s. During Seafood Expo Asia-Pacific, Nguyen Hoai Nam, Secretary-General of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, said Vietnam intends to deepen cooperation with China in the tilapia sector. He noted that Vietnam hopes to forge closer ties with China over tilapia and pangasius, and welcomes more Chinese companies to attend Vietfish 2026.
