Scientific Name: Red Tilapia, also known as Rainbow Snapper, Red Wu-Kuo Fish, Red Herring, etc.
Family and Genus: It belongs to the genus Tilapia of the Cichlidae family.
Origin: It is a hybrid of mutant Nile tilapia and Mozambique tilapia, originating from Israel. It was introduced to Taiwan, China in 1965, and in 1973, mainland China obtained 225 fry from overseas Chinese in Japan and stocked them in the Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute for trial breeding. Environmental Adaptability It is a tropical euryhaline fish, tolerant of low oxygen, with a low suffocation point, and has a wide range of adaptability to salinity. It can live in salinity ranging from 0 to 30‰, with an optimal temperature range of 15-38℃, and the lethal temperature is a minimum of 7℃ and a maximum of 42℃ Feeding Habits It is omnivorous with a preference for plant-based food. Under natural conditions, it mainly feeds on phytoplankton, and also ingests zooplankton, benthic attached algae, oligochaetes, organic debris, etc. When artificially fed, it can directly consume soybean cake, peanut cake, yellow meal, rice bran, corn flour, fish meal, compound feed, etc. Growth Rate It grows very fast. Fry of the current year, when cultured in ponds for 4 months, can reach an average weight of 150 grams. When continuously raised until before overwintering, some individuals can reach 500-600 grams. After overwintering, the maximum weight can be raised to about 2500 grams, and the body length can reach more than 40 centimeters. Under the same breeding conditions, male fish of the same age generally grow 55% faster than female fish. Reproductive Characteristics Red tilapia reaches sexual maturity when it is 5-6 months old and has a body length of more than 15 centimeters. The breeding temperature is 21-35℃, with 24-32℃ being the most suitable. In the Guangdong and Fujian regions, it can breed 4-5 times a year. The number of eggs laid increases with the increase in the body length of the female fish. The eggs are demersal but can be carried upward by water flow. When the water temperature is stably above 18℃, mature broodstock are put into the pond, and natural breeding can occur when the water temperature rises to 21℃. Edible Value Red tilapia has no black peritoneum and looks like red snapper. It has thick meat and few bones. It feeds on green algae in water, making its meat rich in chlorophyll. The meat is fresh and can nourish the skin. It has a high protein content and is rich in various essential amino acids needed by the human body, belonging to high-quality high-protein products. Fish protein is easier for the human body to digest and absorb than meat protein. Ornamental Value Red tilapia has bright and diverse body colors, so it has high ornamental value.
