Peru Launches Urgent Survey on Squid Resources!

According to reports, Peru's Ministry of Production (Produce) has recently officially launched "Operación Calamar Gigante II" (Giant Squid Operation II), initiating an urgent scientific survey on squid resources in Peru's coastal waters. The focus of this survey is to assess the current distribution and resource status of jumbo flying squid(giant squid, dosidicus gigas) in Peru's offshore areas, providing a decision-making basis for maintaining the sustainable development of the fishing industry.

The direct background of this research is that during the period from January to August 2025, Peru's jumbo flying squid fishery exhausted the annual allowable upper limit — a quota of 304,209 tons — in just six months, forcing the government to announce the suspension of fishing activities for this species in late June in advance. This phenomenon has aroused widespread concern and worry in Peru's fishing industry. Many insiders point out that the distribution pattern of squid resources this year is significantly different from previous years.

Jesús Barrientos, Peru's Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, stated: "2023 was the worst year we have experienced in the past decade, yet in the first half of 2025, the catch has already reached the expected annual level in just six months. To prevent the depletion of resources before 2026, we must take responsible measures in advance."

It is reported that this abnormal resource situation may be related to the influx of high-salinity water masses from deep seas towards the coast, causing squid to concentrate near the shore. Although this phenomenon of "improved catchability" brings convenience to fishing, it does not mean that the resources themselves are abundant. "The current density is only the result of local concentration and does not represent an overall sufficient quantity. We need scientific evaluation to clarify the truth," an industry expert pointed out.

At present, "Giant Squid Operation II" has begun sampling and monitoring, aiming to provide the latest key data such as population structure, distribution range, and changes in biomass as soon as possible. The Peruvian government hopes that through this scientific research, it can guide the subsequent formulation of quotas and the arrangement of fishing moratoriums, avoiding irreversible losses to medium and long-term resources caused by short-term overfishing.
