China Tilapia Exports

Mexico's self-sufficiency in tilapia faces obstacles, presenting a great opportunity for Chinese enterprises! Exports of tilapia fish exceeded 11,000 tons in 2024, and the future market space of tilapia is promising!

Julio Berdegué Sacristán, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mexico, stated recently at the "Future of Mexican Tilapia" forum that achieving national self-sufficiency in tilapia by 2030 faces significant challenges. This statement provides important market opportunities for Chinese tilapia export enterprises. Currently, China has become Mexico's largest tilapia supplier. In 2024, Mexico's tilapia imports from China reached 11,013 metric tons, valued at 32.9 million U.S. dollars.

According to official Mexican data, the output value of tilapia in the country reached 2.664 billion pesos (approximately 143 million U.S. dollars) in 2024, but a large amount of imports are still needed to meet domestic demand. In the same period, Mexico only exported 380 tons of tilapia, and the import volume was nearly 29 times that of exports. This imbalance between tilapia supply and tilapia demand has created a stable market space for Chinese tilapia exporters.

The Mexican government has recently launched a tilapia aquaculture promotion plan, aiming to enhance food sovereignty and national protein intake. Berdegué Sacristán emphasized that the aquaculture industry has created 81,000 jobs, with tilapia farming accounting for more than half (45,000), demonstrating the important position of this industry in the Mexican economy.

Industry analysis points out that Chinese tilapia, relying on mature breeding technology, scale effect, and tilapia price competitiveness, occupies a dominant position in the Mexican tilapia market. It is difficult for Mexico's aquaculture industry to break through the bottleneck of production efficiency in the short term, which means that it will still need to rely on tilapia imports in the next few years.

Forum news shows that the Mexican government has emphasized that it will increase tilapia production through technological innovation. This creates conditions for Chinese enterprises to export high-value-added products (such as tilapia products with organic certification and traceability systems). Experts suggest that Chinese tilapia exporters should lay out in advance for Mexico's food safety certification system and seize the high-end market demand during the country's industrial upgrading process.

As Mexico's per capita aquatic product consumption continues to grow, China's tilapia exports are expected to maintain steady growth from 2025 to 2030. The Mexican government's industrial policy of strengthening federal and local cooperation also provides policy support for Chinese and Mexican enterprises to establish long-term partnerships of tilapia.
